Septic tank issues announce themselves the same way in every climate: slow drains, sewage smells, wet ground over the field, grass that is greener in winter than it should be, or a backup at the lowest fixture. The useful split is whether the problem is in the tank (cheap, often a repair) or in the soil (expensive, often a replacement). Most of the expensive failures started as a tank that was not pumped, which is why the cheapest fix is still the one people skip.
Failure signs worth taking seriously
- Drains that are slow everywhere, not just one sink. A single fixture is plumbing. The whole house is the tank or the field.
- Sewage odor indoors or over the tank lids. A missing baffle, a dry p-trap or a cracked lid gasket are the small versions. Odor over the field is the large one.
- Soggy ground or standing water over the drainfield, especially in dry weather. That is effluent at the surface.
- Bright green grass over the trenches in a dry spell. The field is watering the lawn with wastewater.
- Gurgling in the vents or toilets that bubble when the washing machine drains. Air being pushed the wrong way.
- A backup at the lowest drain, often a shower or a basement floor drain, after laundry or guests.

The diagnostic that saves the most money is a pump-out with measurements. If the sludge and scum were past a third of the liquid depth, the tank was the problem and you caught it. If the tank was in good shape and the water is still at the surface a week later, stop paying for treatments and start pricing a field. The replacement cost page is the honest range.
What is the most common cause of septic failure?
Solids escaping a tank that was not pumped often enough. They coat the trench walls, the biomat goes from useful to sealed, and the soil does not recover. Age, roots, a high water table and a crushed pipe all fail systems, but none of them fail as many systems as sludge that should have been in a truck. Septic drain field problems
Once the water has left the tank, the failures are hydraulic or mechanical. Hydraulic: more water than the soil can take, every day, or soil that can no longer take what it used to. Mechanical: a distribution box that settled and dumps everything into one trench, a crushed pipe, a root in a joint, a pump that is not dosing. Mechanical problems are repairs. Hydraulic failure of the soil is a new field, in the reserve area if you still have one.
- Compaction. Vehicles, livestock, a shed, even a trampoline pad. Compacted soil does not perc again.
- Roof water and a sump pump tied into the tank. Clean water that belongs in a ditch, not in the field.
- A garbage disposal. Roughly doubles solids and halves the interval.
- Tree roots in older clay pipe. Modern plastic is less interesting to roots but not immune at the joints.
Frozen septic system
A working system rarely freezes. The tank is below the frost line, incoming water is warm and the biology makes heat. What freezes is a system that has been sitting empty, a pipe with too little cover or fall, or a field that has been compacted and then stripped of snow. Symptoms are the same as a backup, plus frost at a cleanout or a dry, rock-hard patch over a shallow line.
- Do not pour additives or antifreeze into the tank. They do not thaw a line and they can damage the field.
- A gentle heat tape on an exposed pipe is a real fix. Open flame is how people crack a tank.
- Leave the grass long in the fall and keep snowmobiles, plow piles and parked cars off the field.
- A dripping fixture in January is a freeze risk, not a kindness. Fix it.
- If the house will sit empty, have the tank pumped before you leave and talk to the hauler about winterizing the lines.
Sewage in the house or on the ground is untreated wastewater. Keep people and pets off it, stop using water, and call a licensed pumper or installer. If it is coming up in the house, a plumber who understands septic systems, not only a drain snake, is the right first call.
Problems and solutions, in order
- Stop using water until you know where it is going.
- Check the easiest things: outlet filter, a running toilet, a sump tied into the tank, an alarm you silenced.
- Pump and inspect the tank. Measure sludge and scum, look at the baffles, look at the outlet.
- If the tank was the problem, fix the interval so you are not back here in two years. The pumping table is the schedule.
