Septic drain field size comes from one division: the daily flow your house is expected to produce, divided by the number of gallons a square foot of your soil can absorb in a day. Everything else, the trench count, the trench length, the rectangle of yard you have to keep clear, falls out of that answer. The plan view above is the drawing a county asks an installer to submit, drawn to scale for the numbers you set.
The formula
Drainfield area in square feet equals design flow in gallons per day divided by the soil application rate in gallons per square foot per day. A three bedroom house is designed for 360 gallons a day. Loam absorbs about 0.6 gallons per square foot per day. That is 600 square feet of absorption area, which is where the most commonly quoted figure for a three bedroom house comes from.
The soil term is the one that moves. Sandy loam takes 0.8 gallons per square foot per day and the same house needs 450 square feet. Silty clay takes 0.2 and the same house needs 1,800. Nothing about the house changed.

From area to trenches
Absorption area is measured along the trench bottom, so a 3 foot wide trench provides 3 square feet of absorption for every foot of its length. Divide the area by the trench width and you have the total linear feet of trench. Most codes cap a single trench at 100 feet to keep the effluent distributing evenly, so the linear total is split across as many trenches as that takes.
A 600 square foot field is 200 linear feet of 3 foot trench, which becomes two trenches of 100 feet. An 1,800 square foot field is 600 linear feet, which becomes six.
Drain field dimensions and spacing
Trenches are not packed together. Each one needs undisturbed soil beside it to accept the effluent laterally as well as downward, and most codes set a minimum of 6 feet of clear soil between trench walls, more on a slope. That spacing is why a field takes up so much more yard than its absorption area suggests: 600 square feet of absorption occupies a rectangle closer to 1,200 square feet on the ground.
- Trench width: typically 1 to 3 feet, with 3 feet common in trench systems.
- Trench depth: usually 18 to 36 inches to the trench bottom, and it must stay well above the seasonal water table and any bedrock.
- Trench length: 100 feet maximum in most codes.
- Spacing: 6 feet of undisturbed soil between trenches as a common minimum.
- Cover: 6 to 12 inches of soil over the stone or chambers.
Setbacks: the part that decides where it goes
Area tells you how much field you need. Setbacks decide whether your lot can hold it. The exact distances are set by your state and enforced by the county, but the shape of the rule is consistent:

The reserve area nobody budgets for
Most states require a reserve area: a second piece of ground, usually the same size as the field itself and meeting the same setbacks, held clear so a replacement field can be built when the first one fails. If you are checking whether a lot will work, plan for two fields and not one.
Chambers change the arithmetic
Plastic arch chambers replace the pipe and gravel with an open cavity, and most states credit them with a 25 to 30 percent reduction in required area because the open chamber presents more infiltrative surface. Driving or parking on a drainfield compacts the soil and crushes the distribution pipe, and both failures are permanent. Keep vehicles, sheds, pools, patios and trees off it, and keep the grass. Grass over a field is not neglect, it is the correct surface.
