The septic drain field is the buried network of perforated pipe and gravel that takes the clarified water leaving your tank and gives it to the soil. It is also called a leach field, an absorption field or a disposal field, and those are all the same thing. The tank is a settling chamber, it treats almost nothing. The soil under the drain field is the treatment plant, which is why a failed field costs $5,000 to $20,000 to replace and a failed tank usually does not.
What the drain field actually does
Wastewater sits in the tank long enough for the grease to float and the solids to sink. What leaves through the outlet is the middle layer, still full of bacteria and dissolved nitrogen. That water flows into the trenches, seeps out of the pipe perforations, filters down through gravel and then through soil. A biological mat forms on the trench wall within the first year or two, and that mat is where most of the treatment happens. Below it, aerobic soil finishes the job before the water reaches groundwater.
Leach field, drain field, absorption field, disposal field, soil absorption system. Regional habit, same trenches. Health departments in the Northeast tend to write "leach field" and the Southeast writes "drain field". If a contractor uses one term and your permit uses the other, nothing is wrong.
How big is a septic drain field?
Size is set by two things: how much water the house produces, and how fast the soil accepts it. The first comes from bedroom count, because health departments size on bedrooms rather than on how many people happen to live there today. The second comes from a percolation test. A house on sand can need a third of the trench length that the same house needs on clay.

How deep is a drain field?
Shallower than most people expect. Trench bottoms typically sit 18 to 36 inches below grade, with 6 to 12 inches of cover over the gravel. Shallow is deliberate: the top few feet of soil hold the oxygen and the bacteria that do the treatment, and a deep trench puts the water below them. Most codes also require a vertical separation, commonly 2 to 4 feet, between the trench bottom and the seasonal high water table or bedrock. Where that separation does not exist naturally, you get a mound system instead.
Residential drain field layout
- Trenches run along the contour, not down the slope, so water spreads evenly instead of pooling at the low end.
- Six to ten feet between trench centers, so each trench has its own soil to work with.
- A distribution box splits flow from the tank between the trenches. It is the single cheapest thing to level and the most commonly neglected.
- A reserve area equal to the field itself is required in most counties, kept clear for the eventual replacement.
- Setbacks are typically 100 ft from a well, 50 ft from surface water, 10 ft from a property line and 10 ft from the house.
What kills a drain field
- Solids carryover. A tank that is not pumped lets sludge escape to the trenches, where it seals the soil permanently. This is the leading cause and the one entirely under your control.
- Hydraulic overload. More water than the soil can take, every day. Leaking toilets and a laundry habit of six loads on Saturday both qualify.
- Compaction. Vehicles, stock, a shed, a trampoline anchor. Compacted soil does not accept water again.
- Roots. Willows, poplars and maples will find perforated pipe full of nutrients from 30 feet away.
- Age. Even a well-run field has a biological mat that thickens over decades. Twenty five to forty years is a normal life.
A field that is starting to fail smells faintly at the surface after heavy use, and the grass over the trenches grows greener and faster than the rest of the lawn. Standing water and backed-up drains come later, by which time the soil is usually already sealed.
What you can do on top of it
Grass, and nothing else. Shallow rooted lawn over a drain field is doing useful work: it pulls water out of the soil and it keeps the surface breathing. What does not belong there is anything with a root system that hunts for water, anything with wheels, anything with a footing and anything impermeable. Patios, driveways, above-ground pools and raised beds all end the same way.
