A septic system is two machines. The tank is a settling chamber that separates what floats from what sinks and holds it there. The soil under the drainfield is the treatment plant that removes the pathogens and most of the nitrogen. Almost everything people believe about how a septic tank works assigns the tank the treatment job, and that misunderstanding is behind most of the expensive failures: the tank is cheap to maintain, and the soil cannot be replaced without a five-figure check.
The path the water takes
- The house drain carries everything to a single four inch line leaving the foundation.
- The inlet baffle directs flow downward so it does not disturb the floating scum layer.
- The tank holds the water still for a day or more. Grease and paper float, solids sink, and a clearer middle layer forms.
- The outlet baffle and filter draw from that middle layer only, and the filter catches the fibers that would otherwise drift out.
- The distribution box splits the flow evenly between the drainfield trenches.
- The trenches release water into gravel or chambers, where it seeps into the trench walls and floor.
- The soil does the treatment. Water works down through the biological mat and then through aerobic soil, and reaches groundwater clean.
What is happening inside the tank
The tank stratifies into three layers and stays that way as long as nothing stirs it. Scum floats on top, a few inches of grease, soap and paper. Sludge settles on the bottom, the inorganic solids and whatever the bacteria cannot digest. Between them sits the effluent layer, and that is the only layer meant to leave. Anaerobic bacteria in the sludge break down maybe half the organic material over time. The rest accumulates, which is the entire reason pumping exists.

One gallon in pushes one gallon out. The tank is always full to the outlet, which is normal and is not a sign of a problem. What changes over time is the ratio: the sludge and scum grow, the clear middle layer shrinks, and eventually the water leaving has solids in it. That is the day the drainfield starts dying.
What the drainfield does
Effluent leaving the tank is clear but is not clean. It carries bacteria, viruses and dissolved nitrogen. In the trench it seeps out through gravel or a chamber and into the soil, where a biological mat on the trench wall slows it down, and the aerobic soil below does the real treatment: consuming organics, trapping pathogens and converting nitrogen. Three feet of unsaturated soil is roughly what that takes, and it is exactly why codes require vertical separation from the water table.
How long does it take?
Water spends 24 to 48 hours in a correctly sized tank, which is the minimum time solids need to settle. A tank that is too small, or one that has half its volume occupied by sludge, gives water hours instead of days and pushes solids straight to the field. Retention time is the whole reason tank size is regulated by bedroom count rather than left to preference.
What breaks it
- Not pumping. Sludge fills the tank, retention time collapses, solids reach the soil, the soil seals.
- A garbage disposal. Roughly doubles solids loading, roughly halves the interval between pump-outs.
- Bleach and antibacterials in quantity. Normal household use is fine, but a laundry habit built around bleach suppresses the bacteria doing the digestion.
- Grease. It floats, thickens and eventually finds the outlet.
- Wipes, even the flushable ones. They do not break down and they mat the outlet filter.
- Water volume. A running toilet can put 200 gallons a day into a system designed for 450.
How does a septic system work in winter?
Normally, in most climates. The tank is buried below the frost line, the incoming water is warm and the biological activity generates heat. What causes winter failures is not cold water but a lack of snow cover on a field that has been compacted by traffic, or a house that sits empty so nothing warm flows through. Leave the grass over the field long going into fall, keep snowmobiles and plow piles off it, and fix a dripping fixture before it freezes a line.
How septic systems work in rural areas
The same way they work anywhere else, with one addition that matters: a private well is often on the same lot. That is why setbacks exist, commonly 100 feet between the field and any well, and why the direction of groundwater flow gets a look during design. If your water and your wastewater share an acre, treat annual well testing as part of maintaining the septic system, not as a separate chore.
